Privacy Policy

NodinWrite is a product of NodinWrite Systems LLC (“NodinWrite”, “we”, “us”). This policy explains what information we collect when you get a GLASS license key, use GLASS, join the KILN interest list, contact support, or send us a feature request; why we collect it; and the rights you have over it. We keep what we collect to the minimum needed to run the GLASS alpha, keep you informed about it, and answer you when you write to us.

1.Who is responsible for your data

NodinWrite Systems LLC is the data controller responsible for the personal information described in this policy. If you have any question about how we handle your data, you can reach us at privacy@nodinwrite.com.

2.What we collect

  • Information you give us. When you join the KILN interest list, we collect your email address (and any name you choose to provide). We only ask for what we need to contact you about KILN.
  • Getting a license key. License keys for the alpha are issued through Creem, our checkout provider and merchant of record. When you complete a checkout, Creem collects your email address and a billing address, which it needs even for a free order (and, for paid products in future, payment details we never see). Creem tells us the email address of each license holder, and the order details are visible to us in Creem’s dashboard. The checkout also offers an optional, unticked box for NodinWrite news; we record whether you ticked it.
  • When GLASS runs. The first time GLASS opens on a computer, it sends your license key and a random identifier for that installation to our license service at api.nodinwrite.com, which checks the key with Creem. Each time GLASS launches, it re-checks the key the same way, and when you release a computer from Preferences, GLASS tells the license service the same way. Once per launch, GLASS also asks downloads.nodinwrite.com whether a newer version is available. Like any internet request, these carry your IP address. They never include your documents, their names, or anything you type. GLASS has no analytics or telemetry, and its spelling and grammar checking runs on your computer.
  • Support messages and feature requests. When you use the Help Center or Feature Requests form, we collect what you type: your email address (optional for feature requests), your message, and the topic or product you choose. You decide what goes in the message; please leave out anything you would not want us to see.
  • Diagnostics you choose to paste. GLASS can assemble a diagnostics block (Help ▸ Copy Diagnostics) for you to paste into a support message. It contains the app version, an identifier for your operating system and its web view, your display scale, language settings, and graphics mode, a random installation identifier that is unique to your copy of GLASS but not linked to your name or email, and the most recent lines of the app’s local log. The log records what the app did and any errors it hit. It never includes the text of your documents, the folders they live in, or your license key, but it can include a document’s file name. GLASS shows you the whole block before anything is copied, and nothing is sent unless you paste it into the form yourself.
  • Technical information. Like most websites, our hosting and email providers automatically log limited technical data (such as your IP address, browser type, and the time of your request) for security and to operate the service. We do not use this to build a profile of you.

We do not knowingly collect any “special category” data, payment details, or information from children (see section 9).

3.How we use your information

We use the information you provide only to:

  • issue your GLASS license key and check that it is valid;
  • tell license holders about new builds, fixes, and changes to the software they have (release notes), which every license holder receives;
  • send every new license holder a short series of getting-started emails during their first month, explaining how to install GLASS, how to use it, and how to report problems;
  • send NodinWrite news beyond release notes, only to people who ticked the box at checkout or signed up for it;
  • send occasional development updates about KILN to people who joined the KILN interest list;
  • respond to messages you send us, and investigate and fix the problems you report;
  • decide what to build next, using the feature requests we receive; and
  • keep the site and our mailing list secure and working correctly.

We will never sell, rent, or trade your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.

4.Our legal basis

For visitors in the UK, EU, and other regions with similar laws, our legal basis for sending you KILN development emails is your consent, given when you join the KILN interest list. You can withdraw that consent at any time (see section 7), and doing so will not affect anything we did before you withdrew it. The same is true of NodinWrite news: we send it only with the consent you give by ticking the box at checkout. Release notes and the getting-started emails to license holders are different: they are messages about the software you already have, sent under our legitimate interest in keeping the people who run our alpha informed about it, and every one carries an unsubscribe link. Checking your license key when GLASS launches is part of providing the software you asked for. We also rely on legitimate interest in operating and securing the website for the limited technical logging described above, and in running a working product for handling the support messages, diagnostics, and feature requests you send us.

5.Who we share it with

We don’t share your information with anyone except the service providers who help us run the site and the mailing list. These providers act on our instructions and are bound to protect your data:

  • Sender.net: our email list and signup-form provider, which stores your email address and sends our emails, including release notes and getting-started emails to license holders and news to those who opted in. See the Sender privacy policy.
  • Creem: our checkout and license-key provider, which handles the checkout, issues your key, checks it when GLASS asks, and tells us your email address and whether you ticked the news box. See the Creem privacy policy.
  • Cloudflare: runs the small service that starts your checkout, checks license keys for GLASS, and passes Creem’s confirmation to Sender.net; it holds nothing after each request completes. Cloudflare also serves the GLASS downloads and update checks. See the Cloudflare privacy policy.
  • Netlify: hosts this website, processes server logs, and receives and stores the support and feature-request forms you submit before emailing them to us. See the Netlify privacy policy.
  • Google: provides our business email (Google Workspace), which is where your support messages and feature requests are delivered and answered, and serves the web fonts used on this site, which means your browser contacts Google’s servers when the page loads. The KILN signup form, provided by Sender.net, is protected by Google reCAPTCHA, which collects information about your device and browser to tell people from bots. See the Google privacy policy.

Some of these providers are based in the United States, so your information may be transferred and stored outside your home country. Where that happens, we rely on these providers’ standard data-protection safeguards (such as Standard Contractual Clauses) to keep your information protected.

We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect our legal rights.

6.How long we keep it

We keep your email address on our mailing lists until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it, or until we decide we no longer need it (for example, if the project closes). When you unsubscribe or request deletion, we remove your details from our active lists promptly. Unsubscribing from news does not affect release notes, and unsubscribing from release notes or the getting-started emails does not affect your license.

Support messages, and any diagnostics pasted into them, are deleted from Netlify once we have dealt with them, and the email conversation is kept for up to a year afterwards in case the same problem comes back. Feature requests are kept while the idea is under consideration. You can ask us to delete any of these sooner at any time.

7.Your rights and choices

You can unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of every email we send. Once you unsubscribe, we stop emailing you.

Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to:

  • access the personal information we hold about you;
  • correct information that is inaccurate or incomplete;
  • ask us to delete your information;
  • object to or restrict how we use it, and withdraw consent;
  • receive a copy of your information in a portable format; and
  • lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority (in the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office).

If you are a California resident, you have similar rights under the CCPA/CPRA, including the right to know what we collect and to request deletion. We do not sell or share your personal information as those terms are defined under California law, and we will not discriminate against you for exercising any right.

To exercise any of these rights, email us at privacy@nodinwrite.com. We may need to confirm your identity before acting, and we’ll respond within the time the law allows.

8.Cookies and tracking

This site does not use advertising or analytics cookies. On the KILN page, Sender.net’s signup form and the Google reCAPTCHA that protects it may set cookies needed for the form to work and to block spam. We do not track you across other websites.

9.Children

This site, GLASS, and KILN are not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has given us their information, contact us and we will delete it.

10.Security

We rely on reputable providers that maintain industry-standard security measures to protect your information. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure, but we take reasonable steps to keep your data safe.

11.Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we’ll change the “last updated” date at the top of this page. If we make a significant change to how we use your information, we’ll let you know by email where appropriate.
