Why GLASS

Built for those who type the most: authors.

Here are a few of our favorite features.

01

Only see the tools you need when you need them.

GLASS keeps the interface out of your way. The toolbar retreats as you type and returns the moment you reach for it, so what you look at is the page, not the chrome around it. Everything is still there, one hover or keystroke away.

The Productivity drawer beside a manuscript page: a daily goal of 40 words met, the sprint timer ready to start, and the writing calendar for the month.

02

Track goals and stay focused.

Set a daily goal, use a built-in sprint timer, and calendar to track your daily word count and progress.

The Contents panel with four chapters; the third chapter is lifted mid-drag and an insertion line shows it landing above the second.

03

Reorder your book by dragging a chapter.

Open the Contents panel, pick up a chapter, and drop it where it belongs. GLASS moves the chapter with its text and its notes, renumbers everything that follows, and keeps the whole move to one undo step.

Review mode: a suggested insertion underlined in green and a suggested deletion struck through in red, on the page, with the Copy Edit pass selected in the toolbar.

04

A new way to track changes and work with editors.

Switch to Review and every edit becomes a suggestion, marked on the page and accepted or rejected one at a time or in a guided walkthrough. Send your editor a review copy, get their pass back, and merge it. No server, no accounts, no shared drive.

$0Alpha

Free for the whole alpha. One license key for the computers you write on, and every alpha build and update. We don’t plan to remove alpha keys when the alpha ends, and a computer that is already activated keeps running either way. See the Terms of Service.

Checkout asks for your email and a billing address, which our merchant of record needs even at $0, but never a card. Your license key should arrive in your inbox within a minute.

Questions

Is GLASS a layout design software?

No. GLASS is a word processor designed specifically for authors and writers. We are working on a companion app called KILN, which is a professional layout designer.

In early stages of development, we have considered the two apps being built into one, but currently, we are developing KILN as a second companion app. More information will be available soon.

How does the license key work?

Every alpha writer gets a personal key by email. GLASS asks for the key once on each machine you install it on, remembers the answer, and re-checks it quietly when GLASS launches. The key is how we count active writers, and it never gates your manuscript: if a key ever stops being valid, you see a banner and keep writing, never a locked manuscript. We don’t plan to remove alpha keys when the alpha ends, and a computer that is already activated keeps running either way.

A key can be active on a limited number of computers at once. Moving to a new one? Choose Release this computer in GLASS's Preferences on the old one first. Switching keys keeps your current key in place until the new one is accepted, and a first launch without an internet connection can carry on without activating and ask again next time.

Your documents are plain files on your disk. They stay yours, key or no key.

I lost my license key. How do I get it back?

Sign in to your Creem orders with the email address you used at checkout. Creem sends you a sign-in link, and your key is shown on the order. There is no password to remember and no NodinWrite account.

If you no longer have access to that email address at all, tell us through the Help Center and we will sort it out from the order record.

What are the minimum requirements?

GLASS is a native desktop app on both platforms. These are the minimums the alpha is tested against; below them GLASS degrades, but we can’t promise the experience. Intel Macs and ARM Windows machines are not supported in the alpha.

Windows

  • Windows 10 21H2 or newer, 64-bit (x64)
  • 8 GB of memory
  • DirectX 11 graphics

macOS

  • macOS 15 Sequoia or newer
  • Apple silicon (M1 or newer)
  • 8 GB of memory
Does GLASS work with Word documents?

Yes, both ways. GLASS exports to Word (.docx) and PDF, with paragraph styles, headers and footers, footnotes and endnotes, tables, and links intact, and to plain text and Markdown. Pasting from Word or Google Docs keeps your formatting.

To bring a Word document in, choose File ▸ Import. It opens as a new GLASS document with your text, headings, formatting, lists, footnotes, links, and tables, and each Heading 1 becomes a chapter. Plain text and Markdown files import the same way. GLASS then saves to its own .glass file, which carries your manuscript along with its versions, notes, and editing history. See Import a document and Export a Word file in the guide.

Does GLASS support track changes and comments?

Yes. GLASS’s Review mode is built for editing: suggested insertions and deletions, formatting suggestions, threaded comments, and accept or reject one at a time or in a guided walkthrough.

To work with an editor, you send them a review copy. They mark the copy up in GLASS and send it back; you merge the edits. No server, no accounts, and the file can be password-protected end to end. The guide walks through it, starting with Send to an editor.

Does anything leave my machine?

Your writing doesn’t. Spelling and grammar checking runs on-device, there is no cloud sync and no telemetry, and the only network calls GLASS makes are the license check and a once-per-launch update check. Updates install only when you say so, and GLASS asks you to save first. A diagnostics report for a bug leaves your machine only if you paste it somewhere yourself.

Looking for something else? The GLASS user guide covers every feature available in the alpha. Release notes will list details of every update.
